How to Get More Job Interviews: 9 Fixes That Actually Work

If you're sending out applications and hearing nothing back, the problem usually isn't you — it's that your application never reaches a human, or reaches one for three seconds. The interview rate is a numbers-and-relevance game, and almost every part of it is fixable.

Here are nine changes that move the needle, roughly in order of impact.

1. Tailor your resume to each job (the single biggest lever)

The number one reason qualified people don't get interviews: they send the same generic resume everywhere. Applicant Tracking Systems rank you by how well your resume matches the specific job description. A generic resume is, by definition, a weak match for every job.

Tailoring works, but doing it by hand takes 15–20 minutes per application — which is why most people skip it. Landed automates exactly this: paste your resume and the job description, and it rewrites your bullets to match the posting's keywords in under a minute. That one habit typically does more for your interview rate than anything else on this list.

2. Make sure you're actually beating the ATS

Before a recruiter sees your resume, software parses it. If your file confuses the parser, your experience gets garbled or dropped. Keep it ATS-safe:

  • Use a single-column layout (no text in headers, footers, or sidebars).
  • Skip tables, images, and graphics for your core content.
  • Use standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills.
  • Submit a .docx or text-based .pdf, not a scanned image.

3. Apply within the first 48 hours

Many roles get most of their applicants in the first few days, and recruiters often start reviewing immediately. Applying within 48 hours of a posting going live can meaningfully raise your odds. Set up job alerts so you see new postings the day they appear.

4. Match the job title where it's honest

If your title was "Growth Associate" but the role is "Marketing Coordinator" and the work overlaps, mirror the target title in your summary or a bracketed note. ATS and recruiters both scan for the title they posted.

5. Fix your "above the fold" — the top third of page one

Recruiters spend about six seconds on a first pass, mostly on the top third. That space should make your fit obvious: a one-line summary aimed at the role, then your strongest, most relevant bullet. Don't make them dig.

6. Apply to roles you're 70% qualified for

Job descriptions are wish lists. If you meet most of the must-haves, apply — especially if you tailor. Holding out for 100% matches just shrinks your funnel.

7. Use referrals whenever you can

A referral can multiply your odds of an interview. You don't need a close friend inside the company — a brief, specific message to a second-degree connection ("I just applied for X, here's why I'm a fit, would you be open to referring me?") works more often than people expect.

8. Write a cover letter that sounds human

Most cover letters are generic and ignored. A short, specific one — three tight paragraphs on why this role and what you'd bring — still helps for the jobs that read them. If writing them is what stops you, Landed can generate one from a 60-second voice note in your own voice, so it doesn't sound like AI boilerplate.

9. Track and tune your funnel

If you've sent 30+ tailored applications and gotten zero responses, something specific is broken — usually the resume's relevance or an ATS issue. Track applications, responses, and interviews in a simple sheet. The ratios tell you where to fix: lots of applications and no responses points at the resume; responses but no interviews points at screening calls.

The uncomfortable math (and the good news)

Even strong candidates often see single-digit interview rates per application. That sounds bleak, but it means two things: volume matters, and small improvements compound. If tailoring lifts your response rate from 3% to 8%, you've nearly tripled your interviews from the same effort.

The two highest-leverage moves are at the top of this list — tailor every resume, and make sure it's ATS-readable. Get those right and the rest is tuning. Try tailoring your next application with Landed and see the difference on your response rate within a week or two.
